Please note: enrollment in Waynflete’s 2023–24 Afterschool program may be limited due to staffing.
Students in Early Childhood through Grade 8 may enroll in Waynflete’s Afterschool program, which offers daily programs for the following age levels:
EC3–4 in the EC classroom and upper playground
K–1 in the Innovation Lab and outdoor “mud kitchen”
Grades 2–3 in the 2–3 classroom and outdoor play spaces
Grades 4–5 in the Klingenstein (Lower School) library and outdoor play spaces
MS Hive for Grades 6–8 in the MS Forum and courtyard
Registration for Afterschool opens on Monday, August 1, 2023.
Fall 2023 programs begin on the following dates:
Tuesday, September 5 — MS Hive opens for LEAP Week (3:10–6:00 p.m.)
Thursday, September 7 — EC, K–1, 2–3, 4–5 Afterschool opens (3:10–6:00 p.m.)
“Full Fun Days” are offered on parent conference days when there is no school from 8:00 a.m.–3:15 p.m. Register through your Enrichment account.
Payment for Afterschool programs is required for registration and can be made annually or quarterly for full-time and one-day-per-week packages. We also welcome drop-in visits; 10-day drop-in passes are available. Contact the Lower School Office for same-day drop-ins.

PROGRAM DETAILS
Early Childhood–Grade 1
Our Sandpiper Program is now divided into two age groups: Early Childhood and K–1. The curriculum for each of our youngest age groups includes a focus on nature and art, with a focus on community building in K–1. Children enjoy science and art projects, with plenty of outdoor exploration and free play.
EC–Grade 1 students may attend Full Fun Days during scheduled school closures (dates can be found in the registration site).
Grades 2–5
The Owls Afterschool program is now divided into two age groups: grades 2–3 and grades 4–5. Students will spend part of each afternoon outdoors, participating in outdoor games, sports and free play, unless weather prohibits. Students will enjoy hands-on art and science projects, as well as Lego building, reading, and board games. Afterschool sessions start with a brief community meeting and then snack; on Wednesday our meeting is followed by lunch (please bring your own). The Afterschool programs provide opportunities for socializing and building friendships in a nurturing environment.
Students in grades 2–3 and 4–5 may attend Full Fun Days during scheduled school closures (dates can be found in the registration site).
Grades 6–8 (The Hive)
The MS Hive offers a mix of engaging activities, student-planned events, walking field trips, cornhole competitions, art projects, authentic conversations, board/card games, and homework assistance. Afterschool provides a daily afternoon snack. Please bring your own lunch on Wednesdays.
The Hive gathers outside the Middle School Forum at dismissal, or inside the Forum in inclement weather.

All students must be picked up by 6:00 p.m.
Note: the Orchard Street gate will be open only during Lower School drop off and pick up hours. This gate will be locked after 3:30 p.m.

Students in full-time Afterschool receive 25 percent off the cost of most Enrichment workshops (one exception is Middle School Ski). Use code “FTAS” when registering.
Afterschool/Music Instruction Combo discount: Enrichment music students may sign up for a ten-day drop-in pass at 50 percent off. Use code “ASMI” when registering.

Full Fun Days provide full-day care, 8:00 a.m.–3:15 p.m. for students in EC through grade 5 on days when school is closed due to school events, such as parent conferences and faculty professional development. Full Fun Days are purchased separately.
OUR APPROACH
Afterschool Teachers
Afterschool teachers provide a healthy snack and age-appropriate outdoor activities, including a balance of structured games, science/art projects, and free play.
The Afterschool team is made up of the Enrichment Director, Enrichment Assistant, and 6–10 experienced teachers who bring a high level of teaching experience and/or higher education and training.
Afterschool teachers bring demonstrated skills in classroom management, lesson planning, and social and emotional learning concepts (SEL). Each teacher communicates and works closely with Lower and Middle School faculty and the school counselor to address individual student needs.
The Enrichment Office
Waynflete’s Enrichment department oversees the daily Afterschool program, weekly enrichment workshops/classes, private music lessons, and Waynflete SUMMER camp programs. The Enrichment Director designs and runs age-appropriate learning opportunities for Lower and Middle School students, bringing local teaching artists, musicians, and specialized instructors to campus to share their experience, talent, and inspiration after school. We invite you to share your ideas for engaging enrichment activities.
The Enrichment department is focused primarily and intentionally on social and emotional learning (SEL) and creating opportunities for our students to learn lifelong skills and lessons. We provide a nurturing environment, friends, athletic and social opportunities, organized games and supervised free play, and space to make a few mistakes—all in an atmosphere conducive to learning.
Participants discover new interests and talents while building skills that enrich life. The Enrichment staff, teachers, and workshop instructors facilitate team-building to foster an inclusive community where every voice matters and students can share their unique contributions and points of view.
Teaching Standards
Afterschool teachers maintain consistency between the Afterschool program and Waynflete’s Lower and Middle School programs, including Responsive Classroom teaching principles. Students are encouraged to develop and share a point of view, to be risk-takers in an environment that is emotionally and physically safe and nurtures individual expression. The Afterschool Standards inform our approach to social interactions and relationships, community building, programming and activities, our daily environment, as well as safety, health, and nutrition.
Responsive Classroom and Consistent Core Values
Each day, Afterschool students make the transition to out-of-school-time programs through a brief circle time or community meeting to establish the student-teacher connection and provide time for each student to be seen and heard. Daily jobs provide opportunities for students to practice responsibility. Each program creates a charter in which students decide on a few important rules to live by. Waynflete’s core values create the foundation for Afterschool decision-making and rules: 1) take care of yourself, 2) take care of others, 3) take care of the environment.

Wellness Statement
Nutritious Daily Snacks
Daily snacks provided in Afterschool are wholesome and nutritious, high in vegetable, fruit, and natural grains content, and low in sugar content. When possible (as health protocols allow), snacks are homemade on campus by the Afterschool teaching team. Afterschool can accommodate most medical and allergy restrictions. Our staff is trained to maintain a high standard of allergy awareness and an environment that enables accommodation of various allergies.
